Command Your Dogs - Obedience Training To Get Them To Come!
September 4th, 2008
One of the biggest surprises I had as a first time dog owner was training my dog to come. He did so well when we were inside our apartment. Each time I told him to come he did so. However when we got outside when there was a distraction he would bolt and ignore my come command. Sounds like a familar story?
As owners we are usually led to believe that we are in control of our dogs. Obedience training to be truly effective must not only take place inside of the house but outside as well where distractions are more common. So how do we get our dogs to respond to come in all circumstances?
I recently read a great article in the Associated Press about dog trainer Pat Miller, and his techniques on getting your dog to respond to the come command. Many owners don’t understand how to relate to their dogs. Obedience training in this situation requires the owner to understand that a dog cannot generalize the same way humans can. In other words according to Pat Miller saying come in a classroom may not mean the same thing to a dog when they are outside at the park. The article goes on to list the method Pat uses to overcome this problem. You can read the rest of this article by clicking here.
